Nature Contact as a Physical and Mental Health Resource for Veteran Populations

Over the past several decades, there has been growing recognition of the significant impact of nature contact – interaction between humans and natural elements such as animals, plants, landscape views, and the greater outdoors – on various aspects of health and well-being (improved physical health, mental health, social connectedness, and cognitive functioning, greater cognitive, emotional, prosocial, and physical potential energy, and lower stress and anxiety). Recently, the concept of nature contact has been applied to the resilience and rehabilitation of military populations. This session will introduce the foundational findings and best practice advice related to nature contact's mental and physical health benefits and will explore how these findings provide meaningful health and rehabilitation benefits for veteran populations in applied settings.
