The Science of Learning: A Primer for Software Engineers

I have spent more than a decade in this industry, and in that time, everything around us has transformed - tooling, languages, frameworks, patterns… you name it. Some technologies have evolved, others have faded away, a few became overnight darlings, and plenty were nothing more than fleeting blips. Through all of it, the real silver bullet for staying relevant has been continuous learning and upskilling.

But here is the challenge we all face: How do we crack the code of learning so it becomes an organic part of our daily workflow rather than another burden on our already packed schedules?
We are all in different phases of our careers, working in diverse situations, with varying time constraints and learning preferences. What we need are approaches that work us, learning ways that fit seamlessly into our unique context and circumstances.

Add GenAI to this mix, and the landscape becomes even more interesting. The promise is that AI can potentially accelerate our learning, or at least, that is what the marketing materials claim. But does it really deliver on that promise?

In this talk, I will explore these topics and share real world anecdotes from the trenches, examining what actually works when it comes to building sustainable learning habits in our fast-paced industry.
