Auto Index Compaction - SQL Server
Automatic Index Compaction is a new built-in capability in Azure SQL, SQL MI, and Fabric SQL DB that fundamentally changes how we approach index maintenance. Instead of relying on resource-intensive rebuild and reorganize jobs, this feature continuously compacts indexes in the background, improving page density and reducing storage, CPU, and I/O usage.
In this session, we’ll explore how Automatic Index Compaction works, how it compares to traditional maintenance strategies, and how you can use it to simplify operations while improving performance. You’ll leave with a clear understanding of when to use it, how to monitor it, and how it changes the future of index tuning.
