How long have you had SSMS open right now? For most of us it's the tool we live in all day, and for years it barely changed. That's over. Think of it like a car you've driven forever that just came back from a full overhaul: new engine, new dash, and a few driver aids that weren't there before.

This session is a two-part tour. First we cover SSMS 21, the rebuild. SSMS finally went 64-bit on the Visual Studio 2022 shell, so it stops running out of memory on big scripts and huge result grids. We'll walk the rest of what landed in 21: the new Visual Studio Installer with automatic updates, dark theme, vertical tabs and tab coloring, results-grid options like NULL coloring, SQL projects, the Always Encrypted Assessment in the wizard, and the modern connection dialog as an opt-in preview. SSMS 21 also shipped the first Copilot, the Azure OpenAI one where you brought your own endpoint and keys. It was cumbersome, so we'll note it and move on.

Then we get to SSMS 22, the retune, where the good stuff lives. GitHub Copilot replaces that first attempt: you just sign in with GitHub, and chat plus completions are now generally available. We'll write, explain, and fix T-SQL by chat, then push into Agent Mode (preview), where you hand Copilot a goal and it runs queries, reads execution plans, and proposes schema changes, with your approval at every step. Around that we'll cover Schema Compare (preview), built-in T-SQL formatting (preview), the new connection dialog now defaulting to Strict encryption (TDS 8.0), Windows Arm64 support, grid zoom with Ctrl and the mouse wheel, status-bar aggregates, JSON tooling, and deeper Fabric integration.

It's all live demos and real result grids, and I'll call out the gotchas so you know what to expect before you roll it out.
