The Architecture of Evolution: Modernizing Legacy Systems
Every engineering team has one. It lives in the corner of the architecture diagram, labeled only as "legacy." Nobody wants to touch it. Nobody wants to own it. And every six months, someone in a sprint planning session floats the idea of "just rewriting the whole thing."
Stop. That instinct, however understandable, is almost always the wrong answer. The big-bang rewrite has an infamous track record, and the graveyard of failed modernization projects is deep and well-populated.
In this session, you will get a practical, pattern-driven playbook for modernizing legacy systems incrementally without grinding product delivery to a halt. We will walk through the full modernization spectrum from rehost to rebuild, apply the Strangler Fig pattern in real-world terms, untangle the database modernization problem (including the shared-database trap, database-per-service, and Change Data Capture), and build the safety net first with characterization tests and contract tests. Battle-tested, empathetic, and immediately actionable.
