Warning: Side Effects of AI May Include…
Our industry just swallowed the biggest change to how software gets built in decades. The effects have been amazing. I've been using AI to significantly increase my speed, accuracy, and productivity, but I've also started noticing more negative things show up in myself, my team, and my clients' developers that nobody put on the label.
Side effects can include getting irritated with human response times, saying "just one more prompt" at 11pm when you should have stopped working hours ago, or moving creating bottlenecks in the non-coding parts of your process.
Others are harder to spot. Developers in one controlled study were 19% slower with AI while believing they were 20% faster. Pull request descriptions ballooned to 6 times their former length while the humans trying to read them fell further and further behind. All this while our industry has stopped hiring and mentoring the junior developers who are supposed to become the next seniors.
In this talk we'll go through the most serious side effects of AI-assisted development, look at what the research shows, and leave with practical interventions you can start taking today.
