This session examines the integration of Generative AI (GenAI) into the workplace and its potential to enhance productivity amid economic challenges such as labour shortages and an aging workforce. Through a case study on a GenAI-powered code conversion pipeline, we show how the technology boosts efficiency but faces challenges such as organizational resistance, skill gaps, and insufficient buy-in. While AI is transformative, it is too early to conclude that we are in a Fourth Industrial Revolution—a judgment that can only be made in hindsight. Instead, AI demands a new workforce model with AI-augmented software engineers at its core. Based on our findings, we provide practical recommendations, including improving communication, upskilling teams, and starting with small AI pilots to foster organizational acceptance and ensure sustainable implementation.
