AI in healthcare - what is hype and what is real?

AI has been hailed as the saver of the Nordic welfare state and the solution to staffing shortages in the healthcare sector. Not much of this has made its way to the hospitals: doctors use operating systems that look like they were built in the 90s and one patient's data gets stored in hundreds of vendor-specific databases. I have worked as a senior data scientist at the largest public hospital in Sweden, the Sahlgrenska University Hospital, for the past three years and been the lead on our biggest AI-related R&D projects. I have seen all sides of this coin: the hype, the reality, and the attempts to close the gap between the two. In this talk I will take you through a journey of AI in healthcare as it is in the Nordics today: what is possible today, what is actually being done and what we think might be possible in the future.
