AI for Africa: Building Models that Understand Our Languages and Culture

Most AI models today are trained on Western data, leaving out Africa’s languages, culture, and knowledge systems. This gap affects how well AI understands and represents us. In this talk, I’ll share the journey of building African-centered AI models, designed to understand our languages, values, and ways of thinking. We’ll explore how developers can leverage Google technologies like TensorFlow, Gemini API, and Google Cloud to build culturally aware models, from multilingual datasets to fine-tuning strategies.

This session is a call to action: for African developers to not just use AI, but shape it, to make sure the next generation of models truly understands us.
