Session
What long-term independent projects teach us about student agency and future-ready learning
Independent projects do more than just let students show what they know—they help them build the skills they’ll use for a lifetime. In this session, we’ll look at how long-term independent projects help students take charge of their learning by developing abilities like time management, self-motivation, research, goal setting, resilience, and thoughtful reflection.
We’ll use the Personal Project journey at Al Sahwa Schools as our case study to show how we built a supportive environment for independent projects. You’ll hear how we created a school-wide system where students get regular feedback, guided reflection, and strong supervision. We’ll share the practical steps we took to make project coordination smoother, keep supervision consistent, and ensure fair assessment, all while keeping student learning at the center.
Through practical examples, teacher and student reflections, and lessons learned from several years of implementation, you will discover transferable strategies adaptable to any curriculum. The session will provide educators and school leaders with practical tools to design and manage independent learning experiences that empower students to become confident, reflective, and future-ready learners.
