Peer Observation of Teaching: What’s Working and Where are We Headed?
Abstract: This round table will provide a robust conversation regarding the challenges, successes, and future of Peer Observation of Teaching programs. Discussion will focus on ways to develop and enhance Peer Observation of Teaching programs within a variety of learning environments.
Rationale: Peer Observation of Teaching is a well-established faculty development activity that is utilized in many academic medical centers.1 The benefits to faculty and learners are thoroughly documented.2-4 However, as educational technologies expand and learning styles evolve, it is critical that educators participate in continuous quality improvement of their teaching. Therefore, it is equally important to ensure the design of Peer Observation of Teaching programs effectively aids health professions educators in meeting the ever-changing teaching needs.
Introduction: Much has been written about the success and benefits of Peer Observation of Teaching programs. The available literature indicates a wide array of program types, participants, and feedback styles. As institutions have implemented these programs, they are increasingly applied to clinical specialties and the virtual environment. How Peer Observation of Teaching programs are organized and structured varies across institutions. Networking and discussion regarding the success and challenges of these programs support improvement and innovation.
Outcomes:
• Networking across Peer Observation of Teaching Programs to establish a community of practice
• Discussion of unique strengths and challenges of programs
• Discussion of the variety of program structures
• Discussion of the future of Peer Observation of Teaching Programs
Interaction: Participants will be invited to share general information about their observation program and their current successes and challenges. Pre-written questions will facilitate a conversation designed to identify novel ideas. Educators who have yet to establish a Peer Observation of Teaching Program are also welcome to attend and learn from those with real-life experience. A listing of all individuals and programs will be provided to participants after the session to encourage ongoing networking.
