Cyberwarfare in recent armed conflicts
Cyber became an official warfighting domain for the U.S. military in 2018. The Department of Defense (DoD) recognized it as a separate domain, distinct from land, sea, air, and space, in its 2018 National Defense Strategy. This decision reflected the growing importance of cyber capabilities in modern warfare, as adversaries increasingly used cyber tactics to disrupt, damage, or influence military operations, infrastructure, and even civilian systems. But is cyber that important? Is an army complete without it? And more importantly... is it used in armed conflicts nowadays or do armies just spend money for no reason? In this presentation, we will analyze all the major conflicts and wars of our time and see if cyber operations have played a crucial role (or not!) on these occasions. In addition, we will discuss what are the main targets of the attackers, and what tools they use to achieve their purposes. On the other hand, we’ll see if these attacks are repelled and what are the defenders’ actions. Moreover, we will assess the ethical implications of such offensive operations. Finally, we will present the results of our analysis and make some predictions concerning the future of cyberwarfare.
