Practical AI Literacy for Higher Education Without a Comp Sci Degree

Most AI training is built by enthusiasts meant to hopefully convert other enthusiasts and it leaves behind the very people whose voices matter most. This hands-on workshop is for educators, administrators, and student affairs professionals who feel behind on AI and are tired of training that assumes they're already comfortable with the technology.

We start with demystification: a jargon-free explanation of what AI tools actually are, what they're good at, and what they're not, including honest answers about replacement fears, academic integrity, and privacy. Then we move into guided practice with three everyday tasks: drafting communications, summarizing text, and structuring ideas. No jaw-dropping demos. Just real work you already do, done with a new tool and coaching support. We close with discernment - a facilitated conversation about where AI helps, where it doesn't, and where your own judgment and values should draw the line.

You'll leave with practical skills you can use immediately, a clear mental model of how these tools work, and the confidence to participate in your institution's AI conversations as an informed contributor.

Originally designed as a pre-conference workshop, 60–90 minutes. No technical background required - designed specifically for participants who identify as "not a tech person." Bring a laptop or tablet with internet access.

Approximate session format: 25% presentation, 60% hands-on practice, 15% facilitated discussion.

Target audience: humanities faculty, campus professionals, student affairs, administrative staff, and anyone who has felt excluded by the technical framing of the AI conversation.
