The Productivity Myth - Why doing "more with less" doesn't work
The leaders I speak with are usually always trying to figure out one main thing: How to do more with less.
This doesn't work. We maxed out our workers a decade ago and giving them more to do doesn't mean you get more done. Nor does tracking them to the hour to make sure their days are 100% filled (capacity).
You can tell me stories where some peer of yours was able to maximize the amount of worker's time used and I will poke holes in all of them. For example, I had one VP of Program Management who told me that she filled each worker's time to 100%. They were very proud of their strict capacity and resource management processes. She proudly told me how there was one person who had told them they completed a project 2 hours early so they gave them an unrelated task that took 2 hours. I asked if anyone had ever told them they finished a project early since that time--of course no one ever had.
Were they maximizing productivity? Nope. Do you think their teams were completely engaged and giving their all in this type of environment? Again, probably no. So how do you increase productivity?
The answer is really simple and an old agile adage: You maximize the amount of work not done.
Come see how you can start to gain efficiency in your own organization and actually improve productivity without driving away your top performers.
