Escalating Conflict Resolution and SLA in the ESL Classroom

Conflict resolution remains a dynamic instructional strategy behind second language acquisition and empowerment in a learner-centered communicative approach. This technique was used in an intensive UC Berkeley (EAP) classroom for upper intermediate-B2 level students. Personality factors of learning style diversity, and resolution modalities of interpersonal relations between student pairs were brought into conflict and then resolution in an academic task. The results appeared to effectively develop the leadership potential of these students and facilitated their learner autonomy within the ESL classroom through a socio-metric manipulation of intrapersonal and interpersonal dynamics. Educational value formation in this context integrated a rubics cube model of collaborative problem-solving, personality-based learning style diversity, and conflict resolution modalities. Following Bloom's Taxonomy, as students had done in this course, participants in this workshop will pursue these learning objectives (LO's):
• (LO1) - Acquire knowledge and understanding of the Thomas-Kilmann Conflict Modality Indicator (TKI)
• (LO2) - Take the TKI survey, answering questions and scoring their results individually.
• (LO3) - Be provided with a reflective report template to self-analyze their scores and produce their own critique of the results in the five modalities of conflict resolution: 1.) competition, 2.) collaboration, 3.) accommodation, 4.) compromise, and 5.) avoidance.
• (LO4) – Take the online version of Jung's Personality Inventory (MBTI)
• (LO5) - Self-evaluate its accuracy (4-Letter Archetype) with their own perception
• (LO6) - Pair up with an opposite archetypal partner
• (LO7) – Plan a trip together according to the organizational criteria
• (LO8) - Critique personality conflicts and modalities of conflict resolution used
• (LO9) - Create & present a collaborative power point presentation of the virtual trip
• (LO10) – View student samples from the UC Berkeley class on Canvas
Syllabus and course materials will be provided for all participants.
