STARS 3.0 We Have a Score… Now What?

American University completed it’s seventh STARS report in 2024 and received Gold for the seventh time. Knowing that we would use version 3.0 again for the next report created an opportunity to establish an ongoing dialogue with campus partners to help them understand how the information they provide translates to a score and then work with them to identify opportunities for additional points and develop a path forward. In the past, we created a single STARS report to share internally that went to all the partners, but after accepting that that report’s open rate was very low, we decided to create eighteen specific, targeted mini reports and additional materials that only highlight credits a specific department is responsible for. In this session, we will share the report outline, customizable slide deck, and STARS point calculator we created and share how we used it to guide meetings with each group where unique follow up plans were established. We will outline how we hope to use this to advance a sense of shared ownership of sustainability across campus, and how the mini reports continue to shape ongoing conversations throughout the year prior to our next STARS submission.
