I’m never enough: Embracing Neurodiversity

Let’s face it. The workplace is usually not built for Neurodivergent people. Set schedules, bright lights, loud noises, and many meetings. If we are lucky, our colleagues show empathy. But more often, Neurodivergent people face prejudice in the workplace. Being in a place like this can make you feel like you’re always behind, too much, too little, or just everything at once!

Hi! I’m Lisa, and I am diagnosed with both autism and ADHD. In the media, people like me tend to be portrayed as quirky at best, and robot-like at worst. I totally understand. All this misinformation makes it super difficult for our co-workers to get a grasp on what Neurodiversity really means. So, is it really surprising some workplaces don’t see the value of Neurodivergent people? I guess not!

The good news is we can do better! But how? By focussing on the value Neurodivergent people add and the accommodations they need to shine, instead of focussing solely on the costs.

Is it really that easy? Maybe not. During this session, I will tell you more about what my autism and ADHD diagnosis meant for me in the workplace. Next, I will speak about prejudice. What it feels like, and how you can raise your voice against it. Lastly, I will talk more about meeting each other half-way. Trust me, it’s really not as hard as it seems. Hopefully, in the end, we can embrace Neurodivergent identity. Together.
