The Grid Is Becoming a Distributed System

Energy systems face pressure from geopolitical shocks, electrification, extreme weather, and digital infrastructure. The grid needs more than new generation; it needs flexibility.

Japan makes this challenge tangible. Its energy self-sufficiency rate is around 15%, while roughly 70% of electricity generation depends on fossil fuels. Yet Japan targets 40–50% renewable electricity by FY2040 as demand rises from data centers, semiconductor manufacturing, and electrification.

As solar, batteries, EVs, and heat pumps spread, valuable grid resources are moving into homes and cities. Virtual Power Plants coordinate these devices as one software-defined energy asset, shifting demand, storing renewable energy, and improving resilience.

This keynote explores why the grid behaves like a distributed system, and how cloud-native patterns can help operate it.
