You Can't Refactor Your Way Out of Career Apathy
The cursor was blinking, but I wasn't thinking about code. I was wondering when I'd stopped caring. On paper, everything looked fine: solid projects, a good role, a stable career. But the excitement I used to feel writing code had gone quiet. I tried the obvious fixes, new tools, side projects, job hunting, but none worked. I was trying to solve a human problem with technical solutions.
Then I stumbled into a local JUG meetup, hoping for public speaking tips. What I found went much deeper. Over a post-talk beer, I met people whose energy reminded me that behind every line of code is a human story. Reconnecting with that community gradually brought the spark back.
This talk explores why that transformation happened, blending personal narrative with insights from psychology and neuroscience. We’ll look at why mentoring someone through their first pull request triggers your brain's reward system more powerfully than a promotion, and what Self-Determination Theory reveals about the needs your career might be starving.
You'll learn to recognize career apathy not as personal failure, but as a crucial signal. You will leave with actionable steps to reconnect with community, the science behind why it works, and how to take your first step when you feel you have nothing left to give. You can't refactor your way out of apathy, but you can build a new relationship with your craft, your community, and yourself.
