Debugging Cross-Border Teams: Practical Culture Map Lessons
Managing or working in a cross-cultural team is rarely as simple as translating time zones and languages. The real friction usually happens in how we evaluate work, deliver criticism, handle disagreement, and build trust. What sounds like constructive feedback to a developer in Northern Europe might feel harsh to a colleague in Latin America, and silence in a meeting room in East Asia often means something entirely different than it does in Southern Europe.
Drawing from Erin Meyer’s The Culture Map and my own years of leading and collaborating with cross-border, multi-national teams, this session looks at the invisible cultural friction points that show up in day-to-day work. We’ll skip the generic "diversity awareness" talk and get into concrete scenarios: how to give feedback without damaging trust, how to evaluate consensus vs. top-down decision-making, and how to build team alignment when everyone interprets "clear communication" through a different lens.
