The Model Context Protocol (MCP) has been a game changer in 2025 by offering a standardised and open-source protocol to facilitate agentic AI. The adoption across software vendors within just a few months exploded and is transforming the SaaS landscape. At the same time, the protocol and reference implementations have serious shortcomings which need to be addressed either in implementations or in future protocols.
