Acoustic Regimentation: Voice AI, Algorithmic Bias, and the Future of Human Literacy
Abstract: The global debate around AI and literacy focuses almost exclusively on text: automated essays, reading software, and code generation. Yet the most profound interface shift is acoustic. Millions of users are outsourcing reading and knowledge synthesis to conversational synthetic voices.
This transformation collides with a deep systemic flaw: speech recognition error rates remain up to 13% higher for female vocal tracts because fundamental acoustic models were calibrated on narrow male frequency baselines. Simultaneously, synthetic service voices are algorithmically tuned for performative compliance.
When voice becomes the primary medium for information retrieval and digital literacy, whose acoustic architecture determines what gets heard?
This talk examines:
- Why the shift from visual text to synthetic audio reshapes human comprehension and critical literacy.
- The acoustic corset: how voice training datasets treat anatomical variation as an error code.
- What researchers, educators, and enterprise leaders must understand to prevent conversational AI from establishing an exclusionary standard of digital literacy.
Tech, Ethics & Education (AI & The Global Literacy Crisis)
Target Audience: Technology and education policymakers, digital ethics researchers, EdTech creators, and DEI/AI fairness leads.
Preferred Duration: 30–45 minutes Keynote or high-impact panel opening.
AV Requirements: Presentation audio feed for acoustic sample playback; wireless microphone.
Context: Expands the digital literacy discourse beyond text generation into the biological and acoustic realities of synthetic voice models.
