Fiction as history

One of the best 20th century history classes I took as an undergraduate used all novels (e.g. Dreiser, Lewis, Nichols et al) to capture the "truth" of the time period. As a novelist I take this perspective to illuminate familial histories that are part of a larger narrative, to some degree reverse engineering my work to fill in the inevitable gaps that exist in understanding between child and immigrant parent.
