Oracle MAA Building Blocks: RAC and Data Guard

Oracle Maximum Availability Architecture (MAA) provides proven concepts for high availability, resiliency, and continuous database services. The two central “building blocks” are Oracle Real Application Clusters (RAC) and Data Guard. However, between the well-sounding theory and a truly stable production environment lie many unclear details, unexpected side effects, and critical design decisions.
In this presentation, the speaker draws on more than 20 years of project experience with RAC and Data Guard. Topics include technical fundamentals, common pitfalls, architectural concepts, performance tuning, storage design with ASM, as well as organizational and licensing aspects. The focus is on the smooth interaction of these technologies within the spirit of MAA – from load balancing to disaster recovery.
The session delivers honest recommendations, concrete configuration tips, and insights from real-world production systems. It is complemented by historical context and anecdotes from the daily life of a RAC architect – with an emphasis on what (still) matters.
