This roundtable will bring together leaders of nonprofit cultural organizations to discuss their vital role in Filipino American communities. Despite their importance, there are few studies that attend to the ways in which these organizations create visibility, develop pride in Filipino identity, and educate the youth about their heritage from the Philippines. This panel brings together the leaders of three major organizations with a decades-long history of community engagement: Mary Talusan, president of Filipino Cultural School in Los Angeles, Bernard Ellorin, music director of Samahan Filipino American Performing Arts and Education Center in San Diego, and Myra Liwanag, executive director of Iskwelahang Pilipino in Boston, MA. Each will discuss the history, mission, participants, and activities of their respective organizations as well as the challenges they face as they deal with sustainability in difficult economic, pandemic, and political times. Collectively, the panel will provide a window into the crucial role of Filipino American nonprofit cultural organizations and the ways in which they endeavor to support community and youth through arts and education.
