Rethinking Security Prioritization in Defender: Think Like the Hacker, Act Like the Defender
What you see on your Defender dashboard isn't what attackers see on their target list. One is sorted by severity; the other is sorted by opportunity. Microsoft Defender surfaces every vulnerability, misconfiguration and exposure in your environment, but deciding which one to fix first is where most teams get stuck. And the same server shows up as a Defender device, an Azure VM and an Active Directory computer, each with its own list of findings.
This session shares real-life lessons on closing that gap, one challenge at a time:
• One asset, many names: correlating Defender, Entra ID, Active Directory, Azure and Exposure Graph into one asset with one history, so nothing is counted twice or missed.
• What is really Tier 0? Classifying servers, clients and Azure resources from the data you already have, with more than 550 built-in tiering rules and a tier board that explains every decision. Users, service principals and managed identities are tiered from their actual permissions, and AI classifies new Entra, Graph and Azure roles automatically.
• Severity is not risk: scoring every finding by consequence, Tier 0-3 criticality, risk factors (Internet Exposure, Verified Secret, Lateral Movement, Exploit Signals and more) and a customizable Risk Index.
• What matters to the business: weighting every risk by business criticality and data sensitivity from your CMDB, and ranking business services by their combined risk.
• Attack paths: using Exposure Graph to find the paths that lead to your crown jewels.
All demos use the latest version of SecurityInsight, a free community tool developed by the speaker.
After this session you will think like the hacker, act like the defender, and fix what matters first.
Why severity is not risk, and how to score every finding by consequence, Tier 0-3 criticality, risk factors and a customizable Risk Index.
How to classify servers, clients, Azure resources and identities dynamically - assets from the data you already have, identities from their actual permissions.
How to weight risk by business criticality from your CMDB and use Exposure Graph to find the attack paths to your crown jewels.
