Session

The Open Source Edge: Tools, Tradeoffs, and Future Directions

Open source software is central to how our platform team builds, experiments, and scales. In this session, we’ll share how we strategically adopt tools like Kubernetes, ArgoCD, Milvus, Triton, and Onyx to move fast, maintain flexibility, and own our future architecture. Through real-world case studies, we’ll highlight the benefits—and challenges—of using and potentially contributing to open source as a Fortune 500 company.

We’ll also explore the process of open sourcing Grainger software and reflect on how companies like Google and Meta have benefited from an open source strategy.

Learning Outcomes:
- Learn how to evaluate open source tools for enterprise use, balancing flexibility and agility against risk and maintenance.
- See how we piloted and scaled tools like Kubernetes, Milvus, Triton, and ArgoCD.
- Get ideas for building internal momentum and contributing upstream.
