With Great Data Comes Great Responsibility: Navigating the Ethical Maze of Modern Data Processing

we're witnessing a disturbing pattern of data exploitation that extends far beyond occasional breaches. From TikTok's alleged data sharing with China to Cambridge Analytica's manipulation of democratic processes, and period-tracking apps potentially exposing sensitive information in post-Roe America, the consequences of irresponsible data handling are becoming increasingly severe.
As tech professionals, we find ourselves at the heart of this ethical maze. While our instinct may be to collect and connect data now and find its purpose later, this approach is no longer sustainable or acceptable. Regulations are evolving, but they're inherently reactive – always one step behind the latest misuse of data.
This talk explores why we can't rely solely on regulations to guide our data practices. Using real-world examples and practical scenarios, we'll examine how to develop and apply our own ethical compass in data handling. Just as running a stop sign might seem harmless in isolation, the cumulative impact of casual data misuse can be devastating to society.
