Keynote: Message not received
We build systems for people. So, to build great systems, we need to understand people—their needs, their goals, the friction they face, and sometimes their maddening contradictions. Our main challenge as software professionals is understanding the true meaning of our stakeholders' messages. Communication is the hardest part of the job.
How often have you been caught between stakeholders who don’t seem to know what they want? Stakeholders that contradict not only each other but themselves in every other sentence? How often do they change their minds before you can make your next cup of coffee— or worse, when you were ready to press release… That friction affects all of us: developers, architects, managers, and, yes, our stakeholders, too. Left unchecked, this can turn into full-blown toxicity, derailing motivation, morale, and, ultimately, our projects.
In this keynote, I’ll draw on two decades of lessons learned—not about technology, but people. We’ll explore practical ways to understand stakeholders, identify misaligned priorities, and manage expectations to build stronger relationships. This will help you navigate the often-tricky dynamics of stakeholder communication to build better systems (and preserve your sanity along the way). Whether you’re a manager, an architect, or just starting out, you’ll walk away with tools to turn friction into flow—and have a little fun along the way.
This is a keynote, and is not intended as a session.
