From the start of our careers, we're led to believe that we must keep progressing upward, step by step, until we become managers, and then manage more people. But is this the best path?

Often, this change means the company loses an excellent developer to gain a poor manager. So, should I stay a senior developer forever? Are there other ways to grow within my company?
