Teaching APIs to Ask for Payment: Agentic Commerce, One Request at a Time
What happens when an API endpoint can tell an agent: "You can have this, but you need to pay first"?
This talk introduces agentic commerce through one practical building block: software paying for an HTTP request. We'll separate what is possible today from the more speculative promises, then explore how the Machine Payments Protocol uses 402 Payment Required to issue a payment challenge that an agent or wallet can satisfy.
We'll look at how the same approach can support different payment rails, then build a working example that turns an ordinary API route into a paid endpoint with a single line of middleware.
Along the way, we’ll cover receipts, retries, and what happens when payment succeeds but the response never reaches the client.
A practical session for developers who want to understand what agentic commerce means in code, and what they can build with it today!
