Adaptations of a Self-taught Dev: Learning CompSci the Hard (and Fun!) Way
What if every bug, crash, burnout and breakthrough was a hidden computer science lesson? Inspired by Adaptation, starring Nicolas Cage, this talk reframes ten years of “just hacking JavaScript” in public repos, community projects, and production systems as a story of discovery, improvisation, and growth.
Through real-world scenes such as mis-wiring an Arduino over WebSockets, debugging async chaos in shared codebases, and wrestling with retry logic, you’ll see how fundamentals like state, algorithms, and computation naturally emerge through contribution and collaboration.
This isn’t a theory-heavy lecture. It’s a reflective journey for open source contributors, self-taught developers, and maintainers who learned by doing. You’ll gain a framework for turning issues, pull requests, and failures into lasting understanding, mapping practical problems to core CS ideas, and documenting a personal “curriculum by experience.”
Most importantly, this talk reframes impostor syndrome as curiosity in disguise and shows how embracing uncertainty strengthens confidence, stewardship, and long-term participation in open source. Your career isn’t an accident. It’s an adaptation in progress.
