Hardening the Edge: Lessons from Azure Front Door Outages and Mission-Critical Design for 2026

Azure Front Door (AFD) is the global entry point for both Microsoft services and thousands of enterprise customers, operating through over 210 points of presence (PoPs). However, the service incidents of October 2025 provided critical lessons in the risks of global configuration propagation and shared "blast radius" in high-density multi-tenant systems.

This session dives into the technical "hardening" of the platform, including the implementation of the "Food Taster" isolated process and the "shift-left" validation strategy to ensure data plane resiliency. We will also move beyond the platform itself to discuss how architects can build mission-critical solutions that survive even catastrophic edge failures by utilizing multi-CDN strategies and redundant ingress paths via Azure Traffic Manager and Application Gateway. The session concludes with a live demo showcasing a seamless failover between global entry points.
