Interactive Representations: How Video Games and Short Videos Negotiate Asian Identity
IP abstract: This paper examines the evolving landscape of Asian and Asian American representation in new media, focusing on highly interactive media: video games and short video platforms. While new media assisted narrative agency, its interactive nature presents a double-edged sword, creating new avenues for both authentic expression and the amplification of stereotypes. The first part lays out studies in video games. It explores how interactive games can reshape or limit the interpretation of complexity of identity based on the contents delivered. The second half examines short videos carried by Instagram Reels, YouTube Shorts, and TikTok. The rapid feedback loops enabled by comments, remixes, reaction videos, and algorithmic recommendations can empower creators to reclaim narratives, but also accelerate the spread of harmful caricatures and generate vicious circles. By examining these dynamics, the paper aims to illuminate the complex and often contradictory impact of interactivity on the evolution of Asian and Asian American representation and identity.
