Staff gazing: observability for developers
If you think that measuring developer productivity is all about counting commits or lines of code, this is the talk for you!
Observability is an important aspect of running software. It helps us monitor the health of our services, locate problems and find bottlenecks.
Yet when it comes to developing the systems, we often rely on feel rather than numbers to assess how well we are doing.
Accelerate (the book) establishes four key metrics that predict business performance. However, Accelerate only measures from the point when development has finished and focuses on deployment.
In this talk, I will explain how to introduce observability into the development process and use it to calculate the key metrics from Accelerate. I will also cover how this relates to developer experience and what to do with the data once you have started collecting it.
