Between Empowerment and entropy: Citizen Development's Success in the AI Age
Citizen development promises to empower business departments to implement innovations independently – but the reality is usually more complex. With the advent of AI agents in business departments, familiar questions arise: Where are the opportunities for real productivity gains, and where do new risks arise? Here, we see a repetition of problems and approaches that we already know from technologies such as RPA, low-code platforms, and comparable tools. The presentation highlights how the concept of the citizen developer needs to be rethought in the age of AI – in a practical and critical way. It addresses implementation governance, strategy, security, operation, training concepts, and above all, the question: How can automation be designed sensibly without risking chaos? We transfer experience from projects in process management and automation and show specifically what a citizen developer's use of Atlassian Rovo and Microsoft Copilot can look like.
1. Promises and risks of Citizen development of AI agents
2. Application of real-life project experience from the RPA & low-code sector to AI agents
3. Roadmap for adopting citizen development for AI agents, specifically for Atlassian Rovo and Microsoft Copilot
