Building On Success: What’s the Future of Open Source?
The term “open source” was coined more than a quarter century ago, and we’ve come a long way together. No longer the domain of hobby projects and now the foundation of nearly every piece of software critical to our everyday lives, software in general–which nearly ubiquitously includes open source components–is at an inflection point. With increasing regulation around the world built in the wake of high-profile vulnerabilities, growing calls for sustainability of the maintainer ecosystem, and the never-ending march of new technologies, what’s next for open source? The things that worked for the first 25 years are not what will get us through the next 25. Let’s look at that past and see where we should be thinking about heading in the future.
