The inventory promise across a software boundary
An available quantity is a promise made using information from several systems. A storefront, warehouse and carrier can each hold a valid local record while disagreeing about what should happen next.
Drawing on the inventory and messaging topics in Supply Chains Are Distributed Systems, this session follows a fictional order across those boundaries. It examines who owns each state transition, which confirmation makes a promise safe, and how a delayed message changes the decision.
The session compares holding a reservation, accepting temporary uncertainty and compensating after a failure. Each choice has an operational cost. A short design exercise asks participants to define the source of truth for one transition and the evidence needed to reconcile it after an outage.
Attendees leave with questions they can apply in an architecture review and a concrete recovery scenario to test with their operations counterparts. Examples are fictional and do not disclose employer systems.
Available for consideration. Proposed duration is 30 minutes, with 10 minutes for questions. Intended for engineering managers, architects and operations leaders.
