Opening Up: Using Design Principles to Restore the Union as Third Place

This session pairs an architect and a campus life administrator who worked together on an award-winning student union renovation to show how physical design and daily operations intersect with belonging. It is grounded in original, multi-institution survey research, not anecdote, and closes with a low-cost, replicable framework attendees can apply on their own campuses regardless of budget. Speaks directly to the Belonging and Restorative Energy and Action themes.
