Generative AI Tools in Italian-Language Education and Beyond

Rapid advancements in generative artificial intelligence (AI), coupled with its unprecedented availability through open-access tools such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT, have put educators on high alert and prompted important discussions around the potential impacts of this technology on student learning and assessment.

This panel thus aims to investigate the impact of AI-driven language activities on language teaching, learning, and assessment, with an emphasis on the extent to which students can achieve predetermined learning outcomes through interactive engagement with ChatGPT. Presenters will be invited to provide insights into the effectiveness, limitations, and pedagogical implications of incorporating generative AI tools into Italian-language education by showcasing different approaches (in sample activities, assignments, etc.) to usefully integrate ChatGPT in the classroom.
