Closing the Loop: Youth Driving Africa's Circular Digital Economy

Africa is experiencing rapid digital transformation. Internet connectivity is expanding, smartphone adoption continues to grow and governments are investing in digital infrastructure to accelerate economic development. At the same time, the continent faces growing challenges related to electronic waste, resource management and climate resilience. As digital technologies become more widespread, ensuring that Africa's digital future is environmentally sustainable has become both a development priority and a governance challenge.
Young people, who represent the majority of Africa's population and a significant share of its digital users, innovators and entrepreneurs, are uniquely positioned to lead this transition. Across the continent, youth led initiatives are already advancing electronics repair, device refurbishment, responsible recycling, circular business models and climate technology innovation. However, these efforts often remain disconnected from national digital policies and regional governance discussions.
This session asks: How can governments and young people work together to build a circular digital economy that supports innovation while reducing environmental harm?
The discussion will bring together youth leaders, policymakers, environmental organizations, private sector actors, researchers and the technical community to explore governance approaches that promote responsible e-waste management, sustainable digital infrastructure, circular economy policies, green entrepreneurship and regional cooperation. Particular attention will be given to how young people can move beyond awareness campaigns to become active partners in designing and implementing policies that shape Africa's digital and environmental future.
The session will conclude with a collaborative action agenda outlining recommendations for integrating youth leadership into national and regional strategies on digital sustainability, circular economy and climate resilient digital development.
