Open Quest: How to Gamify Open Source Communities and Deliver a Revolutionary Experience
Learn how to transform a technical community into a gamified adventure where learning, mentorship, and real contributions become epic quests. A true story from Chile—built for the world.
How do you get people excited to learn, contribute, and grow in a technical community—without making it feel like more work?
At Open Source Santiago, we created Open Quest, a gamified collaboration system where contributors take on fantasy roles—Warriors, Engineers, Scientists, and Mages—and complete real-world missions using GitHub issues. These quests span multiple domains like app development, platform engineering, automation, and AI. Participants level up, earn medals, and gain experience through hands-on technical challenges and community mentoring.
This talk will explore the design principles behind Open Quest, the open tools used to build it, and how it connects personal growth, social impact, and technical mastery. You’ll see how this system can be adapted to fit other communities or organizations, and how open source collaboration can evolve into something truly immersive and meaningful.
