The Matryoshka Platform - How Platforms Beget Platforms

When we set out to build a platform of any kind, we intend to underpin everything built on top of it. In reality, however, we find that our platforms start to drift after some time. That drift may begin during the initial building phase. New components are discovered in the stack, and the business requests another platform initiative. Suddenly, we find ourselves with platforms within platforms.

What mechanism drives this effect, and how can we utilise the mechanisms that form platform creation to our benefit?

In this talk, I explore how platforms beget platforms in the context of data platforms. Dissect what I believe to be the driving mechanisms behind these unpredictable changes. And look at ways to utilise this to our benefit when managing platforms.
