Session
Indispensable Is Not a Career Strategy
Why do capable, trusted, high-performing people sometimes stop progressing?
Success can create its own constraint. The more reliably someone solves a particular class of problems, the more frequently those problems are directed to them. Over time, the person becomes an escalation point, a knowledge bottleneck, and the safest choice for critical work. Their value increases, but their opportunities may narrow.
This is the competence trap: being rewarded for yesterday’s strengths until there is no capacity to build tomorrow’s.
This practical session explores how individuals and leaders can recognize when expertise has become a constraint. Attendees will learn how to distinguish valuable work from growth-producing work, transfer expertise without losing influence, replace personal execution with scalable systems, and create opportunities that expand judgment, authority, and organizational impact.
The goal is not to become less dependable. It is to evolve from being the person who repeatedly solves the problem into the person who changes the organization’s ability to solve it.
Signature Framework: The GROW Test
Use four questions to assess recurring responsibilities:
Growth: Is this work developing a capability you will need next?
Reach: Does its impact extend beyond your own execution?
Ownership: Does it increase your authority over outcomes and decisions?
Withdrawal: Could the work continue successfully without you?
This session is designed for professionals at any career stage who want to grow beyond being the dependable expert, fixer, or escalation point. It is equally relevant to people managers and organizational leaders responsible for talent development, succession planning, and building resilient teams. No technical or industry-specific knowledge is required.
The preferred format is a 35-minute presentation followed by 10 minutes of Q&A. It can be adapted to a 25-minute conference talk or expanded into a 60- to 90-minute interactive workshop featuring a personal work audit and the GROW Test.
This is intended to be the first public delivery of the session. The material is original, gender-neutral, industry-neutral, and vendor-neutral.
The session is suitable for conferences focused on engineering and technology leadership, product management, professional development, organizational design, workplace culture, and the future of work.
Attendees will leave with the GROW Test, a practical framework for evaluating whether their responsibilities create growth, reach, ownership, and organizational leverage.
