Serverless computing has displayed year-on-year increase with an anticipated growth of 30% or more within the next decade. Thus, in order to achieve and maintain successful serverless workloads in production, observability is a top priority. My team is responsible for several automated workflows consisting of integrated core Step Function flows and numerous sub-flows that require detailed execution details when troubleshooting. We needed a way to take advantage of serverless Step Function visibility to enhance our monitoring and notification processes so we could view failed execution data at-a-glance. This talk explores implementation of Step Function execution observability using tracing and logs in native serverless and third-party tools like Data Dog to simplify maintenance and facilitate rapid incident resolution while preserving security and compliance within the financial services industry.
