The sociotechnical debt of AI: breaking Conway's Third Law (?)

Yes, the famous Conway has two other laws that we don't talk much about... and what is the link with AI and sociotechnical systems? Let's see... :-]

This talk introduces the concept of "AI organizational debt"... yet, is it actually debt? Drawing from recent research on how AI transforms critical thinking and historical patterns of human-technology coevolution, we'll explore the hidden costs AND unexpected opportunities that emerge when organizations integrate AI capabilities into existing team structures.

Through a blend of academic research, practical experience, and slightly desperate humor, we'll examine how traditional patterns clash with the unique demands of AI systems... while considering that humans have always been "natural-born cyborgs" who extend their minds through tools.

You'll discover why your carefully designed team boundaries might create AI bottlenecks, how the shift from execution to stewardship represents both challenge and evolution, and when to embrace versus resist cognitive load redistribution.

Using real-world examples and historical parallels (spoiler: Plato had similar concerns about writing!), we'll distinguish between maladaptive AI adoption patterns and healthy human-AI coevolution, proposing frameworks for organizational design that support both human flourishing and artificial intelligence in the age of extended minds.
