Supercharging Procedural Generation in games with AI
Last year I fell in love with tabletop roleplaying games. Being a nerd, I wondered how possible it would be to use my programming skills to help me build worlds and scenarios for my adventuring party, and of course I thought, "maybe AI can help".
AI has been a contentious topic for the last year, but there are plenty of areas of tech that have used AI in various forms for decades.
Gaming has long been at the forefront of artificial intelligence and content generation. From the earliest applications of randomisation in roguelikes, to procedurally generated universes in games like Elite and No Mans Sky, players are used to algorithmic content adding challenge, variety and fun to their games.
In this talk we experiment with using procedural generation alongside modern LLMs to create narrative storytelling for games that not only plays well, but still feels intentional, human, and engaging.
We'll cover techniques for content generation, how to use AI in a sustainable way and how to constrain our models to make worlds that make sense. Tools and tips that you could, of course, shift to other non-gaming mediums.
