Docs as Context: Evolving Open Source Documentation for the AI Era

In open source communities, documentation has always been critical for onboarding and knowledge sharing. But in the era of LLMs and AI agents, documentation is no longer just for humans—it is becoming essential context for machines.

This talk explores how open source documentation (such as Kubernetes and Istio) can evolve to support both human contributors and AI systems.

We introduce a practical framework for transforming docs into:

- Structured knowledge for retrieval (RAG)
- Context for AI-powered tooling and automation
- Reusable templates for troubleshooting and onboarding

We will share real-world lessons on structuring, chunking, and versioning documentation in fast-moving projects, and discuss why traditional doc patterns often fail for AI use cases.

This session is designed for maintainers, contributors, and technical writers who want to make documentation more accessible, scalable, and future-ready in an AI-driven ecosystem.
