Failure to Communicate
In our work and organizations it's important to have a shared understanding of anything we communicate about. Our success often depends on it.
However, I suspect we often behave as if we have understood what has been communicated to us when that understanding doesn't actually exist. And even worse, when we are the one trying to communicate a message, we often believe that everyone else understands our meaning and intention when it just hasn't happened.
Is it possible that we aren't achieving anything close to the level of communication we believe we are?
Are we failing to communicate while believing that we are communicating well?
Let's investigate how well we are communicating and explore ways to improve our ability to communicate.
We’ll cover:
Definition of communication
The purpose of communication
What success looks like
What failure looks like
The consequences of failure
Some of the things that make communication difficult
A few ideas on how to improve communication
