To Judge a Book: Stereotype and Bias of Fatherhood

This engaging, experiential workshop invites participants to confront stereotypes
and biases surrounding fatherhood and male engagement. Designed for
practitioners, educators, and community leaders, To Judge a Book explores the
hidden assumptions that shape how society views fathers—especially those
navigating barriers such as trauma, incarceration, and systemic inequity.
Through an immersive experience rooted in the Nurturing Fathers Program,
participants will explore how childhood trauma and societal expectations influence
men’s parenting styles. The session includes a guided, hands-on exercise to identify
bias in practice and policy, and introduces tools to build strength-based approaches
that empower fathers to reconnect with their families.
Additionally, attendees will gain practical insight into reading and interpreting
Massachusetts Criminal Offense Record Information (CORI) to better advocate for
fathers with justice system involvement. The workshop encourages honest reflection,
compassion, and collaboration—challenging professionals to reimagine fatherhood
through a lens of inclusion, dignity, and hope.
Strengths:
● Boldly addresses stereotypes and trauma using experiential learning.
● Promotes empathy-driven, strength-based engagement models for fathers.
● Offers practical advocacy tools, including CORI interpretation.
● Anchored in real-life narratives of resilience and transformation.
